In Bondage To Nothing

The Christian life is a life lived apart from the world and a servant to only God. It is not an easy life by no means but a rewarding one when lived out correctly. We are called to freedom in Christ, and yet to not be in bondage to anything other than Christ.

“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭6:12‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Many Christians get tripped up by this phrase and either take it to the extreme of abstaining from anything and everything, or the other extreme of taking advantage of the freedom and living a life after the flesh. Does this verse mean we should not enjoy the blessings of God? Quite the contrary.

“He shall receive blessing from the LORD, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭24:5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

When God blesses us with people, possessions, jobs, etc. we are to appreciate these blessings and utilize them to the utmost in order to bring God glory and to show respect to Him. We are called to be blessed and stay blessed by obedience and commitment to the Lord. Does not mean we will not face trials, but means that the Lord will be with us all the way and strengthen us through anything that comes our way, which is also a blessing from God.

But with the blessings we are called to enjoy we are also called to not make into idols within our hearts. Yes, we can enjoy food, football, beer, family, friend, motorcycles and the list goes on. All in moderation while keeping all things from becoming idols within our hearts and minds. The Lord wants our all, and then the blessings can follow.

We have freedom in Christ, but let us not lose sight of Christ within the freedom. Possessions are all created things and of temporary value, while God is of the eternal and is the One where the blessings come. Bondage is of the world, while servanthood is of God.

What things do you feel might bondage you? Or are you on the other end and believe that all things are bad? Nothing is unclean in itself and we do have freedom in Christ, but let us keep in mind to not be in bondage to anyone or anything and to always set God as the main priority in life and all else will take care of itself by the power and grace of God.
