Going The Extra Mile

In a society of self consumption and love we tend to neglect others whether we realize it or not. As Christians we are called to love others and to help them in times of need, even if it is in convenient for us. Jesus commanded His disciples, which we are, to not just help others, but to do more than what was needed to be done. When we go the extra mile we are then showing forth true love and compassion to others and at the same time we are witnessing to them about Christ.

“And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.” (Matthew 5:41-42 NKJV).

This extra mile is not just a sign of love and compassion, but of self denial too. We are called to pick up our cross daily and deny ourselves, and this denial allows the full work of the Holy Spirit to work through our lives. When we have the full work of the Holy Spirit working in us, we then can truly shine forth the love of God to others and plant the seeds that will ultimately and hopefully grow into the individuals deliverance to Christ.

As I said before it is easy to become self consumed as today’s society constantly bombards our minds with such junk. I understand as I struggle with the extra mile concept myself as my spirit yearns to help others, and yet my flesh wants to remain in the “comfort zone.” It is a daily discipline of self denial enable to fully reap the benefits of living a life after God and going the extra mile for others.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16).

Next time someone ask you to help them with something and your flesh begins to try and overtake you, sit quietly in prayer for a moment and ask God to fill you with His Spirit. At that moment deny your flesh and go help the individual and not just help them, but go the extra mile for them in hopes that God’s light will shine upon their hearts and minds, and therefore bringing them to salvation in Christ Jesus. God bless!
