Start Thinking For Yourself

It is easy to conform to others and their way of thinking especially when we have no roots of our own. I see it everywhere, people following people, a very problematic area within our society today. We tend to be followers of something and someone and this is by nature. It is difficult to think for yourself and I believe it to be exceptionally hard for my generation as most of us have no confidence in doing things outside our parents and fellow family’s will.

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27 NKJV).

The first thing to really look at when thinking for yourself is the fact that no matter what you will always follow someone or something. Now this does not mean that you will not have some organic thoughts of your own, but no matter what you will have something or someone influencing you in some aspect. The key here is setting your roots in the One that can help you think for yourself and guide you to where you need to be.

Jesus is the source in which we can follow and put our hope in and ultimately be able to think for ourselves. There is no other source in which we can follow and be led to where we need to be and transformed into who we need to be. I do not care who or what you try following or try imitating, there is no other that can lead you to where you need to be and who you need to be.

The second thing to look at is the fact of influence. We need to be careful of who and how much others are influencing us. If we surround ourselves with controlling people, we will therefore be controlled ourselves and ultimately become controlling as well. If we surround ourselves with positive people that love who you are, then you will be more apt to being yourself.

Too many times we find ourselves conforming to others and the way they do things or view things. We have to learn to let go of what others perceive and rather focus on what we believe. We are all human and all of us struggle in this life, so why follow someone else that is as frail as you? If we always conform to others way of life and thinking, we then become those people and live out their lives ourselves.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2).

God wants us to be who He created us to be. When we set our roots in Christ we are then building on the only foundation that can keep us stable and keep us as our selves. We will become more Christ like over time, but we will always remain ourselves. We follow in the footsteps of Jesus, but we are all directed in our own individual paths designed by God. The good Lord did not create us to mimic each other and for all of us to be the same, rather He designed us to be unique and authentic.

We have to stop conforming to the pattern of this world or others, and rather conform to the pattern of God. Only in Christ can we experience true freedom and find out who we really are. A lot of people search far and wide to find out who they are in this life, but without God in the picture your searching is in vain.

It is OK and sometimes really good to do soul searching, especially when you have been at the same place and around the same people for most of your life. The key in soul searching is to do it with the Lord at your side and He will guide you into knowing who you are, not just in this life, but eternally who you are in Him. God always has our best interest in mind.

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” (Psalms 139:14).

Go ahead and let go of unnecessary influences and stop conforming to the thoughts and patterns of others. Start living life as yourself with your roots planted deep within Christ. Let the Lord take control in your life instead of others. Watch as the Lord walks with you each and everyday and guides you to where you need to be and who you are in Him. Stop copying others and instead be yourself. Think for yourself and let others think whatever they want too. God bless!
